Trail Conference Volunteer Eric Friedman, Shelter Caretaker of 12 years and lifelong carpenter is looking to improve the user experience at the Devil's Acre Lean-to . Volunteers can come for a day, or make this a fun overnight trip!

 What we will be doing:

  • Stain recently rebuilt privy
  • Set flat stones between the lean-to and fire pit, to eliminate mud
  • Investigate spring for possible improvement, and setting of pipe, for dry months.

Who to contact: If you are able to help out with the project, please email Eric Friedman, [email protected]. Specify which day / days you are available. Please include cell and home phone numbers, and where you are coming from for possible carpooling purposes. This will allow Eric to notify participants with more specifics and any updates, such as weather cancellations. Feel free to contact Eric with any questions by email, text or call 845-594-3817.

The Hike in/Water/Shelter: In addition to bringing in any personal gear for the day or an overnight, your help will be needed to carry in and out tools and some materials. Participants coming later in the weekend may be asked to carry in supplies from the back of Eric’s black and grey truck. The hike in, on the “Devil’s Path” starts with a 1500 ft elevation gain in the first mile, the second mile at about 3500ft is relatively level on an old logging road / railway.

See the Link to an article about the area by Forestry expert Michael Kudish.

There is a small stream adjacent to the shelter to get water at this time of year. Purifying it for drinking is advisable. The lean-to floor should  be available to sleep in during the weekend, but may need to be vacated during work hours. You can either come for the day or stay at the shelter to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience! Eric will spend Friday and  Saturday night.

When to meet: Friday thru Sunday November 11 to November 13. You can either come for the day or stay at the shelter to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience! Eric will spend Friday and Saturday nights.

Where to meet: Devil’s Path Trailhead parking is on Route 214 north of Phoenicia by Notch Lake. Those coming early on the first day will meet at 9 or 10am TBD. Those coming later will check for written notes, concerning what to carry in from Eric’s black and gray truck and will hike in on their own. There is most likely no cell service in the area. Details will be finalized with the volunteers who are coming and their preferences prior to the trip. Carpooling is encouraged.

What to bring: Check weather conditions. Lunch and snacks, sturdy shoes, plenty of water, safety glasses, gloves, water purification and a headlight for the hike out . There is a small stream near the shelter. If you’ll be spending the night, bring your necessary overnight gear and food.  A combination of personal and shared meal, as preferred. Tools etc. will be supplied. We will be using water based stain, which can be messy

Thank you again for your desire to help out, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at the shelter!
